Tonasket School District Mission Statement

The Tonasket Public Schools will provide opportunity for the education of the individual to the maximum of his or her academic and creative abilities. The ultimate end that we seek to achieve is intrinsically intellectual, technical, and moral. Every community force is encouraged to work with the schools in supporting this end and in promoting an appreciation of the American democratic heritage. This understanding of individual worth, dignity and responsibility will maintain the basis for a productive, progressive, and free society.

Scott Olson earns award

Scott Olson, fourth grade teacher at Tonasket Elementary School, has been awarded the Washington Association of Conservation Districts Conservation Teacher of the Year for 2009 (at the secondary level).  This award is in recognition of his work of photopoint monitoring in the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area.  Scott began this project with his alternative school students five years ago and has continued it with his fourth grade class.  He has taken students back up to the Sinlahekin area to do the annual photopoint monitoring and to learn about fire ecology.  Photopoint monitoring involves taking repeat photos of the same scene from the same place over a period of time. There have been four grants that have helped with this work: Washington Department of Ecology, Woodland Park Zoo (Student Achievement from the Ground Up), National Environment Education Foundation, and this year, from the Colville Confederated Tribes.
