Voices From the Field

During the week of June 27th to July 1st, Tonasket School District and OSPI's Migrant Education Program sent fourteen students to Bainbridge Island to take part in the Voices From the Field program. This is the fourth consecutive summer that Tonasket has taken part in this program. It is a truly unique opportunity for the middle school migrant students of Tonasket, who get to travel to Seattle, ride a ferry across puget sound to Bainbridge Island and take part in hands-on science activities throughout the week. Students were housed in the Islandwood lodges with other migrant students from 12 different schools from around the state. During the day they found themselves in small field groups that took part in exploring, discovering, experimenting, reading, writing and teambuilding in a variety of inspiring natural settings. From the bay, to the canopy tower. From the floating classroom in the middle of the pond, to the garden. The host of local ecosystems present on the Islandwood campus made for a fun and engaging experience for all the students involved. This opportunity would not have been possible without the coordination and student advocacy provided by Martha Wisdom, our wonderful bus drivers Keven Haney and Sherrill Angell, the parents of the students that made it possible for their children to attend and Tyler Graves, who chaperoned the trip.
