Hawk Watch

Return To Outreach Home Page

This year we journeyed to Chelan Ridge to watch scientists at work for Hawk Watch International. Scientists stand on ridge tops each day in the fall and count birds of prey as the pass through on their migratory route. These numbers are used to compare to previous years’ counts and give an indication of the health of the species. The health of birds is also an indicator of the health of the environment. Some birds are also caught, measured, and released. We have had the opportunity to see many hawks up close on our field trips to Hawk Watch which has inspired some of our students to want to study wildlife biology more and more.
