Tonasket School District AmeriCorps
What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more
than 50,000 Americans each year in intensive service to
meet critical needs
in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Created in 1993,
AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service,
which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together
these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds
in service each year.
Tonasket AmeriCorps members serve in the Elementary & Middle school working one on one with students who are reading below grade level. Members also organize and participate in an after school tutoring center working with elementary & middle school students who need extra help with homework completions. Additional specific duties of Tonasket AmeriCorps members include, but are not limited to:
- Lead service learning projects
- Manage an after school tutoring program
- Write articles for the School District Newsletter
- Collaborate with other programs and organizations
- Recruit volunteers
- Plan community events, such as Martin Luther King Day & Make A Difference Day
- Attend out of town conferences twice a year and provide training to peers.
- Develop lesson plans for summer school.
- Get things done in the community by providing service to non-profit organizations.
What do I get for serving?
Get an education, experience, and skills.
You'll learn teamwork, communication, responsibility, and other essential skills that will help you for the rest of your life. And you'll gain the personal satisfaction of taking on a challenge and seeing results.
Get money for college.
After successfully completing a 10 ½ month term of service, AmeriCorps members are eligible to receive an education award. The education award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education or training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award currently is $4,725 for a full term of service. A member has up to seven years after his or her term of service has ended to claim the award.
Get a living allowance.
If you serve full-time, you'll receive a modest living allowance of $850 a month. You won't get rich from it, but other AmeriCorps members have found that it covers their basic expenses.
Help with student loans
While you're an AmeriCorps member, you may be eligible for deferment and forbearance on your student loans. If you're eligible, AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that is accrued on student loans for members who complete their service
Health & Child care benefits
You'll also receive health benefits, & may qualify for child care assistance.
As an AmeriCorps member, you will become a vital part of the Tonasket community, addressing community concerns and making a visible impact in the lives of those in need.
